dfSu gRowth highligHts its vital rOle
As the countdown to the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games continues, SportAccord’s Doping Free Sports unit (DFSU) is playing a vital role in the Pre-Games Anti-doping Task Force Secretariat.
DFSU Project Manager Pedro Gonçalves is leading the Taskforce Secretariat – a joint project by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and a number of experts from experienced National Anti-Doping Organisations (NADOs). The Task Force is collaborating with winter sports International Federations and global NADOs to ensure the most rigorous testing systems in Olympic history are in place.
The DFSU’s involvement in Olympic Winter Games underscores significant growth in demand for its services from GAISF members and other organisations during 2017 and into this year.
In the last two years, the number of tests performed by the DFSU has increased by 68%, and the number of athletes’ whereabouts monitored has risen by 130%. The DFSU has also seen a substantial increase in its management of case results (116%) and Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE) cases processed (36%).
Matteo Vallini, Head of DFSU, said:
“I am proud to say that expectations have largely been exceeded thanks to the significant increase of collaborations put in place, not only with the IOC and WADA for the PyeongChang anti-doping activities, but also with GAISF members. The forecasts for 2018 and the increasing trend of collaborations is very positive”.
The DFSU continues to support a number of GAISF members, assisting them in addressing corrective actions identified by WADA’s Compliance Monitoring programme, as well as helping GAISF Observer Federations to reach compliance with the World Anti-Doping Code and implement effective and compliant anti-doping programs.
Launched in 2009, the DFSU actively promotes doping-free sport within the sports movement and brings its expertise to members by providing assistance and services, and managing anti-doping programmes to help the Federations and Major event organisers to be compliant with the World Anti-Doping Code. The DFSU’s main objective is to assist its members in protecting clean athletes as effectively and efficiently as possible, including taking into account the specificity of each sport in terms of organisation, doping risks and available resources.
